Improve Vision with Proper Eye Care

It has been said that the eyes are the window to the soul. Some even claim that you can tell a person’s overall health just by looking into their eyes.  Clearly, our eyesight is an essential part of our daily lives.  Our eyes help us read the newspaper, watch TV, enjoy the beautiful sights, and maneuver our way around the city streets. Truly our eyes are very important.  That’s why we need to observe proper eye care.

Our eyes are small and intricate, and utterly amazing!  The complex workings of the eye is the very principle applied in photography.  Since our eyes are fragile, it is crucial that we know that we should care for our eyes.  There are so many things that we do every day that can affect our eyes’ health one way or another.  Even seemingly minor eye problems can become serious when not attended to immediately or properly by medical specialists.  Eye sight problems can include: vision impairments, corneal abrasions, conjunctivitis, cataracts, and glaucoma to name a few.  Eye care tips are useful in achieving better vision.  Here are some simple and very useful eye care tips:

  • Include Vitamin A rich food in your diet.  Vitamin A rich food boosts your vision.  Food rich in Vitamin A are: papaya, cilantro, carrots, fish, eggs, etc. Whenever taking vitamin supplements, this should be done with proper medical supervision. Since excessive Vitamin A is not flushed out of the body, having an overload of Vitamin A can be bad for your health. Never consume more than the recommended daily requirement.
  • Always use proper lighting.  Whether you are reading a book, writing a note, or using your computer, make sure that there is a generous amount of light in the room.  Using your eyes in poorly-lit rooms places added strain on your eyes as it works harder to see better.
  • Wear protective eye wear.  Exposure to direct sunlight, dust, sharp objects, and other harmful elements can do great damage to your eyes.  Using sunglasses, helmets, visors, goggles and other protective eye wear gear can help prevent injury to your eyes whether at work or at play. To avoid catching a nasty eye infection while swimming in a public pool, it would also be a good idea to wear well-fitted swim goggles.
  • Rest your eyes.  Eye sight care includes resting your eyes every once in a while. particularly when reading or when using the computer for an extended period of time.  Give your eyes a break!  Gently massage the outer part of your eyes or place a warm towel over them to help them relax.
  • Exercise your eye muscles. Like any other muscle in your body, your eye muscles also need to be worked out too.  Moving them upwards, downwards, and sidewards will help give your eye muscles the exercise they need.
  • Do not rub your eyes.  When dust gets in your eye, don’t rub it.  Use a clean tissue or simply rinse it out with water instead.  Since your hands can be a breeding ground of bacteria, rubbing your eye with your hand can cause an infection. Besides this, rubbing the dirt in your eye can injure or scratch the outer layer (cornea) of your eye.
  • Have your eyes checked regularly by your doctor.  Have your doctor check your eyes for any eye problem or changes in your vision. Remember, early detection and treatment can help avert more serious conditions.

If you have any eye infection or injury, it is best to visit your doctor or a hospital emergency room for proper treatment. Immediate medical attention is key to preventing further injury.
